Second anniversary of the dam collapse at Vale’s Córrego do Feijão mine in Brumadinho
ICCM - The International Council on Mining and Metals is an international organisation dedicated to a safe, fair and sustainable mining and metals industry
On the 22 of January was the second anniversary of the dam collapse at Vale’s Córrego do Feijão mine in Brumadinho, Brazil it is a reminder to the mining and metals industry that there is still more to be done if it is to reach the ambition of zero harm. The human and environmental consequences of the tragedy must always be remembered.
Last year, ICMMs members, together with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI), took a significant step towards achieving this ambition of zero harm with the publication of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management.
ICCMs members have committed to implement the Standard, which integrates social, environmental and technical considerations for the first time at the global level, and covers the entire tailings facility lifecycle. This year, ICMM will be publishing comprehensive guidance to support continuous improvement in the management of tailings storage facilities, and a set of protocols for use by companies and third parties seeking to demonstrate conformance with the Standard.
Water is a shared and finite resource, with high social, cultural, environmental and economic value. It is a basic human right and fundamental ecosystem requirement. Water is also an essential component of all mining and metals operations. However, global water resources are under increasing pressure and it is widely recognised that a holistic approach to water management is required to achieve resource sustainability and secure future access for all water users.
Clearwell market effective water purification solutions for the mining industry, enabling reuse of up to 90% of the produced waste water.
