Clearwell and DTU Sustain collaborate to address heavy metal pollution in industrial wastewater for water reuse

Clearwell Europe AB is a Swedish water purification company, aiming to become a leading global supplier of “Best Available Technology” (BAT) water purification solutions. Industrial wastewater containing heavy metals can lead to severe harmful effects, such as disrupting nutrient cycles in plants, and causing development and reproduction disorders in animals and humans. By combining membrane technology and plasma treatments, Clearwell’s technology can not only remove heavy metal contaminants but also purify water so companies can reuse the treated water in their industrial processes.

“We offer the industry advanced water treatment solutions based on “Best Available Technology” (BAT) as well as our own developed technology and system design. With the strong cooperation with DTU Sustain and Associate Professor Wenjing (Angela) Zhang, we aim to further advance our wastewater purification technologies.” says Patrik Philipson, CEO at Clearwell.

“Enabling the industries that generate large amounts of heavy metal effluents to eliminate harmful discharge and recycle the scarce water resources with our Clearwell technologies is our goal" Philipson continues.

“DTU Sustain has a long tradition of collaborating with industrial partners to develop environmentally friendly and sustainable technologies. The department works with applied research and strives to integrate innovation in all its activities. The collaboration with Clearwell will provide valuable results around water technology and resource efficiency,” says Associate Professor Wenjing (Angela) Zhang at DTU Sustain.

“Inviting Clearwell to set up a test “rig” at the university will allow us to explore the efficiency of our electrospun nanofiber materials to purify wastewater containing high levels of metals for industrial water reuse” continues Associate Professor Wenjing (Angela) Zhang.

Many metal recycling facilities pay high fees for landfilling their leachate. A complete Clearwell wastewater treatment system is a complex combination of pre-treatment steps and various filters that lower the levels of heavy metals by more than 98%.

About Clearwell Europe AB

Clearwell Europe AB specialises in purifying water from the presence of heavy metals in leachate. We believe that everyone has a responsibility in effective water management – to use water in a more fair, sustainable, and beneficial way. By offering best available technology (BAT) solutions for water treatment, Clearwell enables companies and organisations to meet regulatory requirements in an increasingly complex environment. www.clearwell.se

Advanced Materials and Membrane Group at DTU Sustain

Associate Professor Wenjing (Angela) Zhang and her research group at DTU Sustain aim to develop scalable and sustainable technologies to address energy and water challenges facing our world. She designs new technologies and builds prototypes for water treatment and reuse, Power-to-X and fuel cells by leveraging novel materials and membrane processes. Her research group also works on membrane materials (polymeric and ceramic membranes), water processes (MF/UF/RO, FO, MD and RED) and energy conversion and storage (electrolysis, fuel cells and batteries).
